Falling Down
Chapter 23
And I hope -- we both do, your mother
and I -- that you and . . . and David will consider
coming to dinner again. It doesn't have to be right
away, just . . . sometime, whenever the two of you
get over being angry at me for tonight. And
no third degree next time, I promise.
He glanced back to David, then, adding:
David's already been much
more gracious than I deserved.
David's polite murmur merely
proved Big Al's point all the more.
Not at all, sir.
Heh . . . exactly. Anyway, that's all
I wanted to say. I won't keep you two
any longer; I know you want to go.
David sucked in a deep breath, lifted his head
at last, and offered his hand to the man.
Thank you, sir.
Big Al took David's hand and shook it without
hesitation this time, his expression becoming a
watery half-smile as he insisted:
No, thank you, sir.

Guess Big Al is a bigger man than we thought. Takes courage to admit when you're wrong and to apologize.
