Falling Down
Chapter 23
It's . . . it's pretty obvious at this point
that this isn't a game he's playing.
And it's also pretty obvious that, far from
being . . . well, what I thought you were, instead
you're a decent young man who's been through a
lot and somehow made it out the other side with
a good character. That takes strength. It takes
guts. And if you have trouble making ends meet
. . . with everything you've been through, I
guess it's understandable. So anyway.
Here, son. Your mother and I . . . we
want you to have this. Take it. Please.
Big Al stopped there, fished in his pocket
a moment, and withdrew a slip of folded
paper. This he held out to Xander.
Xander did. It looked like a check. He opened
it and was promptly flabbergasted by the
astronomical amount he saw written there.
Dad, I can't--
Yes, you can. It's yours.
It's always been yours.
It's what your mother and I have
been putting away for your college all these
years. Keep it for that, or use it to buy yourself
a car -- a good one, to get you to and from
whatever job you find without going broke on
repairs -- and pay bills or buy groceries
or whatever with the rest. Whatever's
right for you, whatever you need it for.
