It smelled of old cheese and spoiled milk. The torn seats were damp and I sat alone, staring at the pictures of my family I had brought with me. There were hundreds of other men sitting aboard, all of whom were going into the army. These men would be my new friends, almost like brothers.... It was dark outside as I boarded the train. All the other men on the train looked big and strong. And yet every one of them sat there, on the falling apart seats, crying, or looking at pictures, most likely of their family. So many men... and.. one woman. She sat at the very back of my car, reading a book. She seemed calm. There wasn't a tear in her eye and every now and then she would giggle at her book. How could she be so cheerful? All the other men on the train looked big and strong.
