Even when we were children,
I had always been fascinated
by dougie's smile. He had this
grin that was by equal
shares friendly and self
mocking, always hovering
just on the edge of the
sarcastic.
I called it His "cheshire
grin," and it was singular
in my mind, for he was the
only person I knew who
smiled like that. It was as
if he knew a secret joke,
and knew that he and
everyone around him were
the unwitting punch line.
He gave me that smile
now, and I couldn't
help but wonder why.
I certainly look better than
you, waif. It looks like you
haven't eaten in the last five
years. Slept, either.
He gave me a thorough
once over that left me
blushing.
He was right, though,
I looked like crap.
